HIPS 3D Filament

3D filament HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) is a well-known soluble thermoplastic material (in a D-Limonene bath) and often used as a support/filler or as such because it is a very good filament.

Commonly used with ABS since they have similar build temperatures. HIPS filament is less prone to 'warping' (lifting/rolling up the sides) than ABS when printing, it can be sanded easily, so a very good candidate for parts that will undergo finishing or a painting after printing.

The HIPS filament is easier to print than most people think.

As long as your 3D printer can print in the 230°C+ range. And that you have some sort of enclosure around the 3D printer to keep drafts away and keep heat in.
People have made enclosures out of a thick plastic bag and/or cardboard! So no need to invest a lot at the start if you want to try printing in HIPS with your 3D printer!

Another important part of printing with HIPS filament is the heated bed of your 3D printer.

Particularly with large pieces. HIPS type filament is less likely to peel off the print bed than ABS. A phenomenon called “warping”. But you'll still need to set your 3D printer's heated bed in the 80-115°C range to combat this. And use a border if necessary.
The weak point of HIPS 3D filament: some people find that it smells a little more than other types of filament when printing. Others don't mind at all, but that's usually true with cheaper brands of 3D filament.

**Always put your 3D filament back in its airtight bag and do not expose it to direct sunlight to extend its life.
